Thing # 23 Is this really the end or ..............
I enjoyed the whole learning process. It was both fun and rewarding. I actually looked forward to getting back to each "thing" every morning.
I have always considered myself a life long learner. I've never set any goals in this area, its just part of my character. I probably got it from my 94 year old father who still loves a good learning challenge.
I will look forward to your next learning experience for me but I hope it does not wait until web 3.0 arrives completely. I'm sure it has already started. Also I'm hoping you leave this exercise up for those who have not found it yet.
Suggestion for future material. Maybe you could offer them in smaller bites? Of course I did all 23 "Things" in about 10 days since I did not learn about it until this month while reading the printed version of NLCommunicator.
As I said in my blog, the one area I'm particularly interested in is Wiki's. Another "thing" I see as very useful to me is podcasting. Lots of potential there.
I thank you for bringing Nebraska Learns 2.0 to us here in the Great State of Nebraska.

Thing # 22 Podcasting
Boy are there a ton of them out there. Most of the ones I look at did not interest me. But that does not say I won't run across some of interest in the future.
I have been listening to StoryCorps.net for the past year. It is a super project. I became so interested in it I played some of the stories to the library advisory board and library director. The director like them too so I suggested we could do our own oral history recordings and also take some excerpts and put them as podcast on the library web site. Well it is in the process of happening.
One of the local banks donated 7 office cubicle panels we are going to use in our meeting room. Four panels will be used to a create space for the kids story hour and three for a recording studio to do our oral history recordings. From the recordings, with the person's consent, we will post excerpts for them and create our own story podcasts.
We will use the free down load software Audacity to make the recordings then export the file as an MP3 file.
If you are interested in the storycorps project here is the link to its home page:

Thing # 21 Youtube.com
I've actually been using Youtube for quite some time. I have a virtual domain under my domain for a friend who is an artist and does paintings of fallen NE soldiers. A year or so ago a Omaha TV station did a news story on him and his project. I contacted the station and they gave me permission to use the video and sent me a copy. I uploaded it to Youtube then embedded it on one of Dick's pages on my site.
I also have a couple more videos on Youtube, one a comic life training video and the other about life on a train.
Here is Dick's web site of paintings: http://www.mccookdirect.com/budig/budig-pics.htm
He is the Dick Budig video.

Thing #20 Discovering Web 2.0 Tools
I am truly amazed at the number of tools there are out there and most of them for free. I joined "Myheitage, Linkin and Pandora". I also used Google Maps to create a picture trail up the north inlet near Grand Lake, CO. There are so many sites out there I could not look at a fraction of them.
I plan on enjoying Pandora radio music this summer when I'm at the cottage in Grand Lake without a TV or radio but with Qwest DSL.
I also started putting in my family's family tree in Myheritage.
I joined Linkin and started looking for business acquaintences who are already Linkin members.
It's almost mind boggling the number of potential web 2.0 sites out there that could leand to great discoveries.
I hope others are enjoying this exercise as much as I am.

Thing #19 Online Applications like Google Word
I actually went in and created both a doc and spreadsheet in Google. It was easy to do and I discovered you can copy/paste documents you created in MS Word and Excel into google documents. I tried to share them with myself but google was have technical problems and I failed.
I also tied to do a presentation but that did not work either. Maybe next time.
I can see me using this feature of Web 2.0 particularly the spreadsheet. If I have them out on the web I can access them from almost anywhere.

Thing #18 Playing around with BPwiki
Fun and I can see how it would be used to keep in touch with others. Form my personal use I doubt I would use any of the featured ones on the Favorite ones. I did join the group and add my edit comment about my favorite vacation spot. Here is the location of my comment: http://nebraskalearns.pbwiki.com/Favorite%20Vacation%20Spots#comment1232040252=undefined&view=page

Thing #17 So, What's in a Wiki?
I see this as possibly a great tool for collaboration and brainstorming. I've probably spent more time reading this "Things'" material than any of the previous "Things". Much of the other stuff was more fun to work with and make things but a Wiki has lots of practical uses.
Before studying this "Thing" I thought there was only one Wiki, Wikipedia. It just showed me how much I am behind the times.
Most Wednesdays I have lunch with a good friend who is the Computer/Internet supervisor of a small company. I shared what I had learned about Wiki's in this course with him and we were off to the races discussing practical uses for it in his company. Primarily internal to his organization. We sat there eating our lunch and brainstorming potential uses of Wiki's, not only for his ag company but grade school teachers (his wife teaches 2nd grade).
As far as using it in our library, I can't see them using it within the staff (there are only 4 full time) but there might be a way to start dialoging with patrons. Not sure just how but it only takes a few to get the ball rolling. We are starting Overdrive this next month and we could solicit feedback from those using it to find out what kind of training we need to do to make it an easier process to learn. We need Overdrive to be a success in its first year at the library or the director will terminate the project and use her money some other way.
All in all I really like the potential of Wiki's and will spend more time finding one in which I can contribute.

Thing #16 - Library 2.0 and Web 2.0
Lots of reading on this one. First off I am a advisory board member and not a librarian so I will admit right off that the behind the scenes of the library such as cataloging and stuff are way over my head. However I did enjoy reading Rick Anderson' article "Web 2.0". It talked about the 3 icebergs threatening our progress 1. Just in case collection, 2. Reliance on user education and 3. Come to us attitude.
1- Actually we are the only full time library in the county and we look much like we have for the past 20 or more years with the exception of having some computer and high speed Internet access. Our book shelves and materials look much like they have looks since I was a student here back in the 60s. The collection of books and printed materials are there for those who want to use them but other than for novels, and books on tape/CDs they are used less and less. The wave as we all know is using the Internet to find what we need. We just help out a little or provide the access with our computers. Many folks don't see us as a source for their needs since they have HSI at home or work. There is a need for change here so we can be a source for more patrons.
2- With such a small staff there is only one real member to do all the training and most of that is limited to showing people how to use the Internet connected computers. There for training is done only once a week if needed. Trying to move into the Web 2.0 environment is going to be a slow process if it is going to happen at our library. As many small libraries we have limited funds and limited staff.
3 - We definately have a "come to us" attitude. What I see is we need to offer what our clients want. I'm hoping that mind set changes and we offer what the public wants but in many cases our clients do know what is out there and therefore don't know how it can benefit them. We first need to learn the new treads and tools that our potential clients could use. How were are going to do this is still up in the air. I'm wondering if the library even know who its potential customers might be? First we need to know what is out there, learn it, build it then go market it.
In summry our library staff needs to me taking this online course to learn what new is out there, find out how our customers could benefit for learing and using it, develop a plan to of acction and get it started. Guess I will bring that up in tomorrows board metting.

Thing #15 - slideshare - Presentations go social
I really had fun with this lesson. I created a slideshare account then put together a PPT and uploaded it. I can see where this site could be very valuable to certain people and organizations.
I have not done an exhaustive search of the PPTs on slideshare but I'm sure I can find something I can use.

Thing #14: Tagging & social bookmarking
It's amazing what is out there. I created a Delicious account and uploaded my bookmarks from Firefox. Not a problem but trying to think of all the possible tags for each site is a real challenge.
I can see it is a really neat concept and allows me to always have my important bookmarks at hand, even when I'm using another person's computer. I will take it another step later by searching delicious bookmarks on the subject of "Colorado History" It was another fun exercise.

Thing #13 Twitter - What are you doing?
I can see where folks some people would just live this site. I'm not that kind of a communicator. An email a day is about what I like to do to and from a friend. Maybe if I had a person who was was very close with and used the computer as muck as I do, I might find Twittering useful. As of right now it is not. I did however, find several people I knew who were already Twittering. And topics of interest to me that interested others.
Interesting but not for Steve at this time. Thanks for the experience.

Thing #12 - Librarything.com account
I did just as instructed and joined Librarything.com then added 5 books. Where I had difficulty was remembering to change the tags for each book added. I ended up having to go back and edit most of them. If you want to view my catalog list of the books I added you can go here:

Thing #9 More Flickr Fun
Folks have done some neat stuff with the images from Flickr. My favorite of the three was Montagr - creating a photo mosaic from photos found on Flickr. I found myself moving my courser over the mosaic and checking out what photos were used. It's amazing what people can make with talent and time on their hands.

Week 5 - Discover Flickr
Interesting site. I've posted some picture from Grand Lake, Colorado and my trip to Paris in 2006.
Here is one Photo from the Paris trip. http://www.flickr.com/photos/11768624@N00/363481529/.
It's a great place to see and share wonderful photos. I've encouraged our library to have a Flickr account but so far nothing has happened.

More of week 4 #7 Finding RSS feeds
I tried out all four of the of the Other Search tools that can help you find feeds but did not locate any sites I wanted to be notified about a change. I did think of a couple more sites I wanted to be notified about that new material and added their site to my Bloglines list of feeds. Guess I am not too interested in many blogs or web pages.

Week 4 blog on RSS
This was an interesting exercise. I was able to get the exercise done and even added a couple extra RSS feeds. Unfortunately a couple of the sites I was hoping to RSS mark did not have the feature active. All in all it's a pretty cool concept.
Still learning & this time IM Chat
Just finished the 3rd session of Nebraska Learns 2.0 and IM chatted with Allana. It was a breeze to create a Yahoo Messenger account and get going. I contacted Allana with ease. She was busy working at her desk so the entire process only too minutes. I use IM Chat with software companies when I have a problem and it works like a dream. I also have a skype account so I can call just about anyone in the US and Canada for practically nothing.
Hope you all have a pleasant experinece with IM Chat.

My First Blog
This bolg is in conjunction with the Nebraska Learns 2.0 project. I first viewed the 7 & 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners.
I thought the video I watched was very well done and pointed out a good way to get started. I need to make a contract with myself, set my goals, realize the obstacles I have ahead of me and get going.
Actually I've always considered myself a lifelong learner and am continually learning new software to use in my business and personal life. Presently I'm teaching myself Camtasia and Comic Life.
Later this week I will be doing a short introduction at the local community college on how the faculty can use Camtasia to enhance student leaning. And later in the month I will be doing a 3 hour evening workshop in the use of Comic Life and making personal comic strips to share with family and friends.
